According to a news release from the City of Greenville, the Swamp Rabbit Trail will soon be getting trail markers. Due to a collaborative meeting with the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation Department, Greenville City Police, Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, Greenville County Office of E9-1-1, and the Greenville County Recreation District, these posts will help serve as an emergency marker system along the 14-mile Swamp Rabbit Trail.

Posts will be installed every half-mile with the code “RS” plus the nearest one-tenth of a mile clearly marked on the front. With the new marking system in place, Swamp Rabbit users will always be within 90 yards of a trail marker.

The purpose of the posts is to help 9-1-1 operators and emergency personnel know precisely where an emergency is, thus improving the overall response time to a call. Another reason for the signs to is to help quickly locate areas of the trail which are in need of repair or attention.

Many of the Swamp Rabbit Trail’s users are visitors from out of town or families out on a nice bike ride. Having a clear marking system in place will allow for all visitors to know exactly where they are should the need for help arise.

This 14-mile trail is the backbone of the City’s Trails & Greenways Master Plan, spreading from Greenville Technical College to Cleveland Park to Furman University to the City of Travelers Rest. Along with this trail, several others will be receiving the same marking system; Falls Park, Cleveland Park, and the entire Swamp Rabbit Trail in the county.
